On January 1, 2000 a new California law known as SB1418 authorized non-lawyers to prepare legal documents for public doing their own legal procedures and representing themselves before California courts.
Legal Document Assistants are those who for compensation assist the public in filing legal papers for any self-help service for members of the public who are representing themselves in a legal matter.
Legal Document Assistant registration is required in each county where the services are performed.
The law authorizes a Legal Document Assistant to:
Produce and distribute, to the clients that are representing themselves in a legal matter before California court, the legal materials that have been published;
Self-help, prepare and filing the clients’ legal documents under the direction and instruction of their clients;
File the clients’ legal documents in the appropriate courts.
At Los Angeles Legal Document Assistant our legal document assistants are certificated paralegals from an accredited ABA college and have accumulated extensive experience and background in legal field, and some provide paralegal services to attorneys while also providing legal document assistant services directly to members of the public.
Under California law, any non-attorney offering legal document assistant preparation services to consumers must obtain a $25,000 bond and register as a legal document assistant with the County that is offering the services.
Although Legal Document Assistants under no circumstances can provide legal advice or opinion, but they are permitted to: 1) prepare legal documents; 2) provide attorney-authored general information and published legal documents; and 3) file and serve documents at the direction of the client. However, this doesn’t mean that they are not the most valuable resource for your legal matter. Many, if not all, legal forms are complex and confusing; incorrectly filled out forms will delay your case, possibly for a long time and it may also result in addition cost and expenses.
Los Angeles Legal Document Assistants are experienced Legal Document Assistants and perform the similar tasks routinely that can help you to avoid the pitfalls and also to make sure every important detail on a form is filed correctly, accurately and properly. This alone makes them the best choice for your self-help legal purpose.
California Legal Document Assistants provides a low-cost, upfront, flat fee, no surprise, alternative to hire an attorney for routine forms and documents in many cases.
